#WOTW: Rip and Replace – a phrase used to describe an approach to updating software where legacy systems are completely removed from the systems map and replaced by something completely new. Alternative approaches involve gradual migrations, work-arounds, bolt-ons and development tweaks or quality controls. Rip and replace has big advantages on achieving cleanest quality very quickly and may feel like the only option for out-of-date software. But there are major risks in a sudden change and the cost question needs addressing.
