Microsoft to limit Windows 8 Tablet Users

Microsoft could possibly limit users to using only one internet browser on tablet devices running its upcoming Windows 8 operating system. Mozilla, who created the FireFox browser, has said in a blog post that the company will restrict tablets that are running ARM processors to using only the Internet Explorer browser.

Mozilla assert that Microsoft will be able to enforce this restriction through the security and power specifications of the ARM chips and only Microsoft can manage this by themselves. Tablet devices running Windows 8 will give its users the option of using Windows Classic or the Metro interface and the restriction of one browser only will apply to the Classic version.

The Metro interface has been designed so it will support other browsers beside Internet Explorer but Mozilla are not happy with Microsoft for limiting the Classic environment to use IE only. Microsoft have been previously in hot waters over their browser dominance in its operating system and in 2010, the European Commission forced the company into offering users alternative browsers.

If Microsoft are to ahead with its plan to restrict Windows 8 tablet users running the Classic version to using one browser only then it could see browsers such as Firefox and Google Chrome objecting to their browser exclusivity.

Writing the Perfect CV

The IT Industry is a fast-paced and competitive environment. To get ahead means landing a job with a cutting-edge company and to achieve that, you need a CV which sells you and your skills in the best possible manner.

When providing personal details, include the basics such as your name, address, contact details, email and the URL to your website/blog if you have one.

Place your key skills in a prominent position and bullet point them so that they can be easily read and it is easy to see what you are capable of. Exaggeration is not a good idea, you will get caught out.

List your work experience starting with the most recent first and only go into detail about relevant roles.

Briefly list your qualifications in order of the most relevant using both academic and professional ones. Keep your personal interests short but be sure to include any that you have as they will provide insight as to your suitability for the company.

There is only a limited amount of space on your IT CV in which to sell yourself, your skills, experience and activities – both professional and outside of work.

Be sure to find the balance between skills and experience. List your skills but try to put them into the context of each role you have worked in and the manner in which you achieved them.

You must showcase specific skills such as programming languages so that potential employers will know what level you are at and whether you are eligible for certain roles.

You should tailor your IT CV for each role you apply for. The appropriate skills should be placed in the most prominent position and the relevant experience should be highlighted.

You will understand that certain skills sets are only applicable for corresponding roles. Don’t write a new CV each time; just move your information around your template so that it applies to the current role.

Presentation and Layout

The look of the CV is everything. To start with, your IT CV needs to stand out from the crowd and stick in the mind of the reader. There is a variety of different templates which can be downloaded to get you started.

However, the best CVs are always the most original in design yet informative and easy to read and use in practice.

Just remember: an exciting and innovative CV still needs to have the right information contained within it to be useful. Whether it is presented as a timeline, a pictograph, info-graphic or anything else, you still need to include the basics: your skills, experience, a little something about yourself and some contact details.

Address your application to the correct person

Research your contacts at the companies you apply for, this can be done from the company website or through social media sites such as LinkedIn.  Is your contact in IT, HR or general management? Word your CV accordingly.

The IT Manager will know and understand the terms you use giving you the chance to demonstrate your technical prowess. Alternatively, if your CV is to go straight to a non-technical HR manager, you should go for less technical language and mention your achievements in terms of the overall advantages they have brought to the company.

Once you have your IT CV looking the best you can make it, all that is left to do is apply for the role and ace the interview. Good Luck!

Why IT is Going Green

As public awareness and government agenda put pressure on companies to adopt more environmentally sound policies, opportunities for those who wish to go greener are on the rise.

Green technologies such as videoconferencing, virtualisation and power management are all hot topics at the moment.

As adoption rates increase, demand for IT staff to maintain, run and manage these systems has risen accordingly.

Green IT has come to prominence over recent years as businesses look to cut energy costs and the need for business travel.

Many organisations have already begun to implement green initiatives; with a number of larger companies even having dedicated CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) teams to oversee the companies green goals.

For the business the benefits are clear, allowing them to reduce overheads, cut carbon emissions and communicate their green status to their customers and stakeholders.

For IT professionals, the benefits are also there for the taking. As companies invest in a greener future, they need staff with the right skills and attributes to handle and oversee the smooth running of new technologies and new systems.

Another encouraging fact is that the green IT market is constantly expanding; this means a steady stream of jobs should be available in the years to come.

If you are thinking of taking a fresh direction in your career, getting up-to-speed on green IT could set you on the right path to better, greener things.

Do You Really Need an Augmented Reality CV

Augmented Reality CVThe IT job market is constantly growing with no signs of stopping. This means that there is now more competition for jobs than ever before. This has led to potential candidates looking for ways to establish themselves apart from other candidates.

These include LinkedIn profiles, blog pages, and now, augmented reality CVs.

But are these new CVs actually practical?

The main issue we have is that the technology is simply not readily available to the average jobseeker, as they require a green screen and 3d imagery. Whilst it’s plausible that this technology will become more accessible eventually, it’s not very likely that employers will receive many AR CVs.

If an employer is having to sift through 10, 50, or 100 applications, consider the reality of them taking the time to sit down and watch an AR CV.

Chances are, if forced to watch it, they would only passively stare at the screen rather than pay actual attention.

Also, if an employer is trying to go through CVs at a fast pace, slowing down may serve to frustrate them. Is frustrating a potential future employer a good idea?

Also, consider the relevance.

Augmented reality CVs are undoubtedly a creative feat. But is it anything more?

If you’re applying for a job in the creative side of IT, an augmented reality CV will definitely help you to show off your skills, presentation style, and creative potential.

However, if you aren’t applying for a creative job, chances are that this would be of very little help. I suggest seriously considering the pros and cons of an AR CV before delving into creating one.

Put basically, AR CVs definitely deserve all of the hype surrounding them. However, they won’t be taking off any time soon.

The advice we would give you is to concentrate on creating a CV that meets the needs of recruiters whilst demonstrating your skills and experience.

If innovative content adds weight to your job application, and only once a high quality standard CV has been created, then look into tools that help to display your qualities as an employee – avoid using these features just for the sake of it.

Quick Fixes for Firefox

Firefox

If you are a frequent user of Mozilla Firefox, the chances are that at some point you will run into difficulties operating it.

You computer can drastically slow down due to the processor being to overwhelmed by Mozilla Firefox not responding, which can also (frustratingly) cause your computer to freeze completely.

Here, we will hope to provide some solutions that will help you to quickly resolve the problems that will undoubtedly ruin your browsing experience.

Firstly, the plug in container was created in order to keep the plug in processes separate from the other processes that run Firefox.

When the plug-ins crash, it will crash the plug-in container rather than the entire browser, which will interrupt your searching. Disabling the plug-in container will help if you have an old computer or a very low memory.

This can be down by firstly typing about:config in the address bar.

Then, navigate to the lines:    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled

Double click four of the lines to change them from True to False:

Sometimes the problem can be solved by simply upgrading FF. If an update is available, it can fix already acknowledged bugs and problems which can potentially solve the problems you’ve been having.

If it is still refusing to cooperate,  doing something as simple as uninstalling and reinstalling the software. However, we urge you to ensure that any important bookmarks and favourites have been properly backed up.

If all of these steps have failed to correct any of the issues you’ve been having, the last step you should take is checking for virus infections, as if Firefox is still causing issues after all of these checks you have definite reason to be concerned.

These steps should ensure that Firefox runs correctly again, however if there are indeed any additional issues that the solutions haven’t covered, please leave a comment and let us know!

Thank you

The importance of Computer Literacy

Resourcelink consultantsThe use of computer technology is now at its highest peak thus far, and there is no doubt as to whether it will continue to grow. Therefore it is extremely important that professionals in the work place are able to use computers properly, as they are now being relied upon more and more to hold and transfer information across various professions.

In this context, computer literacy is does not connote the ability to teach yourself new skills at an expert level. It instead refers to being able to understand and operate numerous applications available on computers for certain tasks.

The issue is less of a concern for the professionals of tomorrow, as recent studies have shown that 82% of 16-18 year olds log on to the internet – and more specifically Facebook – everyday without fail.  However in the workplace of today there is a worrying rate of professionals who are not capable, nor have sought to use the internet in order to aid their work.

Most professions have indeed incorporated computers into their profession, which has no doubt assisted their work. However the numbers of professionals who are still computer illiterate gives reason for concern, particularly in the medical profession.

If you are a professional who has a duty of care to other professionals, it is becoming increasingly essential to ensure that your workforce is computer literate, given your profession of course. If they are not, you should definitely consider hiring a PC consultant agency in order to train your staff.
